Air source heat pumps

If you're looking to reduce your heating costs, air source heat pumps are around 3 to 4 times more efficient than LPG, oil, electricity and gas boilers.

How does an air source heat pump work?

They use a small amount of electricity to operate and work a bit like your fridge — but in reverse, even working in winter temperatures as low as -20c.

  1. The heat pump contains a liquid that absorbs heat from the outside air.
  2. The heat pump compresses the liquid to increase its temperature.
  3. The heat from the liquid is transferred to your heating system.
  4. The heat is transferred to your hot water tank giving you water temperatures up to 70c. Plenty for your radiators and hot water.

For a three-bedroom detached house, it would typically cost around £14,638. It could pay for itself in seven years through
fuel savings and the government's Domestic RHI - this gives payments of around £1,273 per year - which makes this a good alternative to electric storage heaters, oil or LPG.
